Summer Pet Safety

10 Tips for Renting with Pets

Did you know that many of CPM’s properties are pet-friendly? CPM is one of the few property management companies in Tyler that allow larger dogs at our homes. The CPM Team cares about our tenants, including their pets. To help you keep your furry family members safe this summer, please follow these tips:

1. Never Leave Pets in a Parked Car!
If your dog can’t get out with you when you get out of the car, leave them at home. Temperatures in a car can soar to over 117 degrees within an hour when the temperature outside is just 72 degrees. Temperatures in a car after the A/C has been turned off will match outside temperatures within five minutes, leading to heatstroke and often death.

2. Stay Hydrated
East Texas summers are hot and humid, making it crucial to keep pets well-hydrated. Always provide your pets with access to fresh, clean water, and consider placing multiple water bowls around your home or property. For pets that spend time outdoors, ensure they have water available at all times. Adding ice cubes can help keep the water cool and refreshing!

3. Recognize the Signs of Heatstroke
Pets can easily suffer from heatstroke, a serious condition that requires immediate attention. Symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, difficulty breathing, lethargy, vomiting, and collapse. If you notice any of these signs, move your pet to a cooler place, offer water, and contact your veterinarian right away.

4. Avoid Hot Surfaces
The ground can become extremely hot under the summer sun, potentially burning your pet’s paws. To avoid this, walk your pets early in the morning or later in the evening when the ground is cooler. You can also test the temperature by placing the back of your hand on the pavement for a few seconds—if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pet. Stick to grassy areas whenever possible, and consider using pet-safe booties for added protection.

5. Provide Ample Shade and Shelter
When pets are outside, they need shaded areas to escape the sun’s rays. While trees and covered patios provide natural shade, ensure that the area is well-ventilated and that your pets are not confined to small, enclosed spaces like dog houses, which trap heat.

6. Adjust Exercise Routines
While exercise is important, it’s crucial to adjust your pet’s routine during the hot summer months. Avoid strenuous activities during the peak heat of the day and opt for short, frequent walks. Consider activities like swimming, which can help your pet stay cool. Always supervise your pet around water, whether it’s a pool, lake, or river.

7. Protect Against Parasites
The warm, humid climate in East Texas can increase the risk of fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes, which can carry diseases harmful to pets. Ensure your pet is on a veterinarian-recommended preventative regimen and check them for ticks, especially after outdoor activities.

8. Proper Grooming
Maintaining your pet’s coat can help keep them comfortable during the summer. While it may be tempting to shave long-haired pets, their fur actually helps regulate body temperature and protect against sunburn. Instead, regular brushing can help remove loose fur and prevent matting, which can trap heat.

9. Keep Indoor Spaces Cool
Make sure your home provides a comfortable environment for your pets. Use fans, air conditioning, or cooling mats to help regulate indoor temperatures. If you don’t have air conditioning, consider creating a cool space with fans and plenty of water.

10. Plan Pet-Friendly Activities
East Texas offers numerous outdoor activities that you and your pets can enjoy together. Whether you’re visiting a dog park, going on a hike, or enjoying a day at the lake, always bring water, keep an eye on the sun and heat, and be mindful of your pet’s limits. Remember, not all pets enjoy the same activities, so choose ones that suit your pet’s preferences and comfort level.

The CPM Team appreciates that pets are part of the family. By following these summer pet safety tips, you can ensure that your pets stay healthy and happy throughout the season. A little extra care and attention can go a long way in preventing heat-related issues and ensuring a safe summer for your pets.

Stay cool!
