Be Prepared for Freezing Temps!!

Please remember you can be billed for damage caused due to neglect.

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes

  • Allow water to trickle, especially at night when the temperatures drop.
  • Disconnect and drain all garden hoses from outside faucets and store, removing them from the harsh elements if possible.
  • Always know where your water main is located in case you need to shut it off in emergencies.
  • Cover outside faucets with insulating foam covers.
  • Open up all cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate and warm the pipes.
  • Sprinkler systems should be shut off and drained.
  • If you go on vacation, leave the heat on, set to at least 55 degrees.

How to Prep the Inside of Your Home for Winter Weather

  • Cover your window air conditioners.
  • Turn your ceiling fans on low in reverse (clockwise when looking up) to circulate warm air.
  • Check the batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms to make sure they are working properly.
  • Changing air filter maximizes air flow and reduces heating cost.

How to Prep the Outside of Your Home for Winter Weather

  • Bring in potted plants from outdoors.
  • Cover any outside plants with insulating materials.
  • Clean gutters as wet leaves and debris remaining in the gutter over winter adds a significant weight and volume to the gutter when frozen and increases water build-up on the roof.
  • Brush off snow after each snowfall from trees and plants with a broom to prevent them from breaking due to heavy snow buildup.

Additional Friendly Winter Reminders:

  • Check the antifreeze levels in your car.
  • Add freeze resistant windshield wiper fluid and spray it a couple times to circulate the lines.
  • Make sure pets have a warm, safe place.
  • If you are leaving the home, be sure to keep the heater running to prevent frozen pipes.
  • Prepare an Emergency Kit: Buy flashlights or battery operated lanterns for use during power shortages. Other suggestions include: battery powered radio, drinking water, pre-packaged non-perishable food, propane camp stove fuel (NOT to be used indoors), non-electric can opener, charged cell phone, tool set, first aid kit, prescription medication plan in effect and pet food if you have a pet.

Stay safe!!
